WHEN THE TRINITY ENCOUNTERS POLYCRISIS

This article explores the concept of polycrisis as presented in the Core Principles of Common Calling and Mission (Pokok-pokok Panggilan dan Tugas Bersama, PPTB) of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (Persekutuan Gereja-gereja di Indonesia, PGI), using the Trinitarian paradigm as a theological and interpretive framework. This paradigm, articulated in the PGI’s recently released Common Understanding of the Christian Faith (Pemahaman Bersama Iman Kristen, PBIK, 2024), offers a meaningful way to reflect on the Church’s role in responding to the complex, interconnected crises of our time. The article aims to demonstrate how the Trinitarian vision expressed in the PBIK can inform and deepen the Church’s awareness of, and engagement with, the polycrisis described in the PPTB. It argues that these two perspectives (the theological and the practical) are not only compatible, but mutually enriching, and should be considered together within the broader framework of the Document on Church Unity (Dokumen Keesaan Gereja, DKG). Ultimately, the study highlights how the doctrine of the Trinity remains open to ongoing interpretation, allowing it to speak meaningfully into contemporary contexts and to guide the Church in embodying a living, responsive faith.
