Abstract

The Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed (325–381) stands as one of the most influential doctrinal formulations in the history of Christianity, emerging from the theological controversies of the fourth century and functioning as a key marker of orthodoxy. This article examines the historical development of the creed, with particular attention to its formulation in the First Council of Nicaea and its subsequent expansion at the First Council of Constantinople. Moving beyond a purely descriptive account, the study analyzes the dynamics of its reception across different ecclesial and historical contexts. Employing a historical-theological approach, this article argues that the creed should be understood not merely as a fixed doctrinal statement but as a product of ongoing negotiation between theological reflection, ecclesial identity, and political power. The reception of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed reveals patterns of both continuity and contestation, particularly in relation to communities that exist outside or at the margins of Nicene orthodoxy. The article further explores the reception of the creed within the Indonesian context, where churches have largely inherited Nicene-Constantinopolitan formulations through Western missionary and colonial traditions. It demonstrates that, while the creed is formally acknowledged in many ecclesial documents, it has not always functioned as a central object of theological reflection in the formation of Indonesian Christian identity. This raises critical questions regarding the transmission of doctrinal authority, the role of historical memory, and the need for contextual theological engagement. In conclusion, the study suggests that a critical re-examination of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed is necessary, not to undermine its theological significance, but to enable a more dialogical and contextually grounded appropriation within contemporary Indonesian Christianity.
