Abstract

The year 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, a pivotal moment in Christian theological history which affirmed the divinity of Christ through the formulation of Logos Christology. The council responded to Arianism—which reduced Christ to a mere creature—by declaring that Christ is “of one substance with the Father.” However, this formulation primarily emphasized Christ’s eternal relation to the Father while minimizing the role of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ life and ministry. In today’s theological and pastoral context, such a Logos-centric approach is seen as insufficient for addressing the spiritual needs of believers who seek the presence of the Spirit in daily life. This article proposes a re-reading of Christology through the lens of Spirit Christology: an understanding of Jesus as fully human and fully empowered by the Holy Spirit, who lived, acted, and rose from the dead by the Spirit’s power. Drawing on the works of Hendrikus Berkhof, Piet Schoonenberg, and Roger Haight, this article argues that Spirit Christology complements Logos Christology by highlighting the dynamic reciprocity between Christ and the Spirit, and opens pathways for interfaith dialogue, contextual theology, and engagement with global challenges. Furthermore, this article presents an integrative Christological model grounded in Trinitarian theology: Christ as the eternal Logos who lives by the Spirit and sends the Spirit to the Church. Such a model offers the Church a more vibrant, spiritual, and contextual vision of Christ—not merely as a dogmatic object but as a divine subject actively working in history, culture, and human experience. While Nicaea remains foundational, the Church today is called to continually move forward in the renewing light of the Spirit.
